Hunting African Pygmy Goose

AFRICAN PYGMY GOOSE (Nettapus auritus)

Key Characteristics

The bright yellow bill and dark green patches on the side of the head of the male, dark green upper parts and rusty orange underparts are distinctive and diagnostic. The females are similar in most respects but the bill is duller and they lack the green patches on the sides of the head. Hottentot Teal and African Pygmy Geese are our smallest duck species.

African Pygmy Geese prefer relatively deep permanent or seasonal, still, clear-water ponds, vleis and dams with floating and emergent aquatic vegetation. They appear to be especially fond of pools with water lilies.
